Olympic chiefs to probe video

London 2012 bosses have confirmed they are investigating video footage which had to be pulled from the organisers' official website because it risked giving people epileptic fits.

Lord Coe, chairman of the London 2012 Olympic organising committee, said: "We have set up an internal inquiry into exactly what happened with our suppliers and the promotional footage that was shown. We are getting to the bottom of what checks were made."

The shots, used as part of the launch event for the controversial Olympics logo, showed a diver piercing the water in a flickering splash of colour.

A spokesman for Epilepsy Action said: "We now have 30 people who have suffered as a result of this."

Within two days of last week's launch, more than 48,000 people had signed a petition calling for London 2012's new graffiti-style logo to be scrapped.

The logo, made with the hi-tech new media-friendly younger generation in mind, was signed off by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in February.

The row over the £400,000 branding has not been raised so far during the three-day London visit by the IOC's co-ordination commission of inspectors - but it is set to crop up in commercial presentations on Wednesday.

London Major Ken Livingstone stood firm in his view that those responsible for the Olympics video should not be paid. He said: "When you commission somebody for something you use in advertising you expect something that is good, that operates well."

He has described the failure as a "catastrophic mistake".

Still unable to show great enthusiasm about the logo, he added: "I am a politician, I do not make design decisions. I think it is a disaster when politicians do. It is a logo. It is not the meaning of life or a secret code that will identify the blood line of Mary Magdalene. It is a logo that will grow on you."
