Oppose rail office cuts, says union

The country's biggest railway workers union has launched a campaign aimed at reversing plans to cut ticket office opening times at a number of railway stations.

The Rail Maritime and Transport Union said ticket offices would close altogether at weekends at some stations and 22 jobs could be lost under proposals by First Capital Connect.

The union said more than 40 stations across London and in other areas including Luton and St Albans will be affected by plans to cut 800 hours a week from ticket office opening times.

General secretary Bob Crow said the company improved revenues by 8% in just six months last year, adding: "Now they are seeking to protect their massive profits by taking the axe to the services that our members provide.

"These cuts would see some stations lose their ticket offices entirely at the weekend and will leave stations inadequately staffed at weekends and in the evening, which can only make passengers feel less secure.

"Ticket machines are no substitute for real people offering help and advice, not least for disabled travellers and some passengers would end up paying more than the inflated fares they already have to."

The union urged passengers to make formal objections to the plans by a deadline of February 3.
