'Orwellian' CCTV slammed

The spread of CCTV is leading Britain to an "Orwellian" situation, a senior police officer has warned.

Deputy chief constable of Hampshire Ian Readhead said the country could become a surveillance society with cameras on every street corner.

He told the BBC's Politics Show CCTV was now being used in small towns and villages that did not suffer from high levels of crime.

The police chief went on to question whether places with low crime levels were justified in the expense and intrusion.

There are reportedly up to 4.2 million CCTV cameras in Britain - about one for every 14 people.
