Pair facing trial over Corfu deaths

The parents of two children who died from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning while on holiday in Corfu said they were pleased two British travel agent employees will face trial in a Greek court.

Thomas Cook was standing by its staff, who will face charges following the deaths of six-year-old Robert Shepherd and his sister Christianne, seven, in October 2006.

They were poisoned in an apartment while their father Neil Shepherd, 38, and his girlfriend Ruth Beatson, 28, survived.

Their mother Sharon Wood, 25, was in the UK at the time of the tragedy.

The family issued a strongly-worded statement saying they were "pleased" about the development.

It said: "As we stated from the outset, we hold Thomas Cook responsible for the events which led to the deaths of our children, so we are therefore very pleased that now the representatives of Thomas Cook will face trail.

"We remain disappointed that Thomas Cook continue to channel their efforts in denying allegations and are not being proactive in helping our ongoing CO campaign.

"They have not fitted monitors in their properties and we, as a family, find this insulting and dangerous. They have the power and influence to stop any more deaths by CO abroad by leading the way for other tour operators and make some good of our tragedy."

A spokeswoman for the holiday firm said it was "shocked" its employees would face charges.

Thomas Cook said a full investigation by an independent gas expert found in October 2006 that the trip switch on the gas boiler which prevents carbon monoxide build-up was short circuited.
