Pair hurt as car plunges over cliff

A man and woman have been flown to hospital after the car they were in plunged 23 metres off a cliff.

Police said the pair, who have not been identified, suffered serious injuries following the incident at midday near Falmouth, Cornwall.

A major rescue operation was launched involving police, coastguard and firefighters and the woman was the first to be freed from the wreckage.

She was airlifted by a Royal Navy rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

Firefighters were later able to free the man who is also now at the hospital.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: "A woman and man were in the car, a Renault Clio, when the accident took place around noon at Pendennis Point.

"Their injuries are thought to be serious."
