Parent-teacher link 'helps progress'

Children will do better in schools if their parents know their teacher, ministers have said.

Schools secretary Ed Balls said more co operation between parents and schools could lead to children behaving better in class and improve pupils' progress.

Research commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families found that parents became less involved in their child's schooling as they moved from primary to secondary school.

Barriers such as limited time, schools not providing clear direction and correspondence, and parents feeling they did "not want to bother" busy secondary schools were all reasons why parents did not get involved with their child's schooling, it found.

Mr Balls said: "All the feedback I receive is that where parents and teachers work together, children benefit enormously. Parents' active encouragement and support for their children's learning produces academic benefits and children have a more positive attitude.

"But there are still many parents who feel that it is difficult to get involved in their local schools, especially at secondary level. I want to keep up the momentum gained in primary schools where parents are far more likely to get involved."

Ministers led by Mr Balls today launch the Time To Talk consultation, which aims to gather parents views issues from childcare to homework. The information will be used to formulate future Government policy.
