Patients to rate their GP practice

People will be able to post remarks about England's 8,269 GP practices, available to read on www.nhs.uk
As well as finding out about opening times and additional facilities, prospective patients will be able to read about how easy it is to get an appointment, how staff treat patients and whether patients felt they were involved in decision-making about their care.
People will be able to recommend their local medical centre or criticise it, although abusive comments and those which mention staff by name will be removed.
The tool is similar to the hospital comparison service launched during the summer and follows the recent Government announcement that patients will soon be able to register with any GP practice of their choice.
Health minister Mike O'Brien said: "As we open up real choice in primary care, it is vital we equip patients with enough information to make the right choice for them.
"We recently announced that we intend to abolish GP practice boundaries, building on success in extending GP opening hours and establishing almost 100 new GP health centres open 12 hours a day, seven days a week across the country.
"This new tool allows every single GP practice in the country to see the patient's view on what they are doing well and what needs to be improved. It will help drive up quality across the board, and is another step in ensuring we have a modern NHS which reflects the needs of the patient."
The initiative is being supported by the Family Doctor Association. Chairman Dr Peter Swinyard said: "Patient feedback on GP services is an effective way of driving up the standards of primary care even further."
The chance for patients to post comments has also been welcomed by the consumer organisation Which? Senior policy advisor Claire Lilley said: "There is hardly any information out there for people looking for a good quality GP surgery, so it's great to see a site that enables people to compare GP services."
