Pay rises running at 3.8%

Pay rises are running at the "relatively high" level of 3.8%, an increase of 0.3% over last year's deals, according to new research.

A study of 130 settlements by Incomes Data Services (IDS) showed average agreements increasing in the three months to April, although staying below RPI inflation, which is 4.2%.

The report said pay forecasters had been wrong-footed by rising prices for food and fuel, which look set to remain volatile, making future predictions difficult.

Average deals in manufacturing firms increased from 4% to 4.3%, while in energy and water companies the figure was 4.5%.

In contrast, average wage increases in the public sector fell back slightly from 2.7% to 2.6%, although the biggest bargaining groups, in local government and the NHS, have yet to settle.

Ken Mulkearn, of IDS, said: "Rises in the cost of living are having a clear effect on pay reviews in the private sector. Many firms which had agreed lower increases in 2007, in the expectation that inflation would fall, are finding they need to award higher increases this year, in order to restore their employees' purchasing power.

"Of course, the picture on affordability and profitability, which continues to be broadly healthy in key parts of the economy, makes this possible."
