Peer involved in fatal M-way crash

Lord Ahmed, who recently flew to Sudan to secure the release of British teacher Gillian Gibbons, sustained cuts and bruising and suffered severe shock after the M1 pile-up.
His gold Jaguar crashed into a red Audi that had broken down in the fast lane at junction 35 near Sheffield. The Audi had previously crashed into the central reservation of the motorway at 6.20pm, spun around and ended up facing north on the southbound carriageway.
The 28-year-old driver and his 30-year-old passenger managed to get to the hard shoulder but police said the driver was hit as he crossed the M1 again to get back to his car.
The man, named as Martyn Gombar and originally from Slovakia, was pronounced dead at Rotherham District General Hospital.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said two female passengers in the Jaguar - one aged 49 and one in their mid-80s - both sustained bruising.
Speaking from his home in Rotherham, Lord Ahmed confirmed that he was involved in the crash but said he did not wish to speak about it.
At least four other vehicles were involved in the pile-up and the carriageway was closed for several hours after the crash.
Lord Ahmed was appointed to the House of Lords in 1998 and has lived in Rotherham since childhood.
His negotiations with the President of Sudan in November, alongside Baroness Warsi, earned the release of Liverpool teacher Gillian Gibbons.
