Pilot killed in light plane crash

A pilot was killed when his light aircraft crashed in the Scottish Borders.

The man died when the plane went down near the village of Midlem, three miles east of Selkirk, Lothian and Borders Police said.

Emergency services attended the scene, which is in an area of remote farmland with poor light and accessibility. The area has now been cordoned off, police said.

It is believed the male pilot was the only person on board the plane when it went down.

Police said no more details of the victim would be released until relatives had been informed.

Inspector David Watt, the officer in charge, said: "I understand the plane had taken off from a local airfield earlier.

"We will be working closely with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch in an effort to discover the cause of the crash."

No further details would be released this evening, police added.
