Pilots' union call off walkout

A strike by staff employed by the trade union which represents airline pilots has been called off following an improved offer aimed at resolving a row over pensions.

Members of the GMB employed by the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) planned to stage a 48-hour walkout in protest at changes to their final salary pension scheme.

But following a meeting between the two sides, the strike was suspended and the staff are due to meet to vote on the proposed deal.

GMB officer Dave Kent said: "I am delighted we have received an offer which I believe will be acceptable to our members."

The GMB had accused Balpa of "hypocrisy" by planning changes to the final salary pension arrangements, but the pilots' union said it had offered new employees a "first rate" defined contributions scheme.
