Player will not face rape charge

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans will not face charges over an alleged rape at the team's Christmas party due to insufficient evidence.

Evans, 20, who has won nine caps for Northern Ireland, was arrested after a 26-year-old woman made an allegation of rape at the Great John Street Hotel on December 18 2007.

A statement from the Crown Prosecution Service said there was "insufficient evidence" to charge Evans, who was sent out on loan to Sunderland in January.

Carol Jackson, head of the rape and family abuse team at City of Manchester CPS, said: "After carefully examining the evidence in this case, we have decided that there is not enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction."

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said no charges would be brought against the alleged victim.

Belfast-born Evans was not a regular in the Manchester United side before he was sent out on loan, although he had played for the team three times, including two appearances in the Champions League.

He returned to Sunderland - where he spent last season on loan - and has played nine times as the side battle to avoid relegation.

He was one of a number of Manchester United players who attended the club's Christmas party at the Great John Street Hotel.

The hotel is a boutique "town house" hotel converted from a Victorian schoolhouse in the trendy Castlefield area of Manchester.

A spokeswoman for Manchester United said the club had no comment to make about the decision not to press charges against Evans.
