PM Brown to take holiday in Suffolk

Gordon Brown is set to spend his summer holiday in the Suffolk seaside town of Southwold.

The Prime Minister will eschew the lavish foreign breaks favoured by his predecessor, Tony Blair, and remain in the UK.

But Mr Brown will hope that this holiday lasts longer than last year's trip to Dorset, which was cut short by crisis meetings over foot-and-mouth disease.

Instead the premier, his wife Sarah and sons John and Fraser had to make do with a few snatched days at their home in Scotland. They are expected to spend a full week in the East Anglian resort this year.

Mr Brown's decision to holiday in Britain is designed to set an example amid gathering economic misery. Tory leader David Cameron is similarly expected to travel to Cornwall.

The frugal breaks contrast sharply with those enjoyed by Mr Blair when he was in Number 10 - which included stays at Sir Cliff Richard's Barbados home and the Florida mansion owned by Bee Gee Robin Gibb.
