PM: Don't vote for 'racist' parties

The Prime Minister has launched an attack on the British National Party (BNP) at a No 10 gathering held to celebrate Black History Month.

Gordon Brown urged people not to vote for "racist and anti-democratic" parties in the months ahead.

He told an audience of some of the most influential black people in the country that, over the last year, there had been two major events, one of them a great event and one difficult.

"First there was Barack Obama's election as president.

"It was a privilege to have him here in London, it's a privilege to work with him, it's a great honour for us that he has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

"But the other event was the election of BNP members to the European Parliament and we must think about how, together, we can expose these politics of discrimination, and I hope we will all work together.

"Over the next few months, however people vote, they must be persuaded not to vote for racist and anti-democratic parties like the BNP."

Mr Obama's election as president "shows that injustice is not the final word in the human condition," he said.

He told his audience, which included business leaders, entrepreneurs and people from science, engineering, the arts and the media: "Each of you here has changed the world in one way or another. Each of you makes me proud of our country."
