PM: Major effort to control disease

Gordon Brown has attempted to reassure farmers that everything possible is being done to stamp out the latest outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

He said a major national effort is under way to "contain, control and eradicate" the disease and he praised all those involved for their "magnificent" work in dealing with the crisis.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the Regional Disease Control Centre in Reigate, Surrey, which is co-ordinating efforts to deal with the disease at a local level.

He met local officials working to tackle the outbreak in Surrey at their daily operational meeting.

Mr Brown, has abandoned his holiday in Dorset to deal with the crisis, also met local farmers, whom he thanked for their "forbearance" and co-operation.

"I understand that this is a difficult time for them and appreciate their anxiety and worry," he said.

"We must do everything we can to control, contain and eradicate this disease. We have more than 150 people out in the field making sure it is possible to carry out tests and check the area.

"We also have hundreds of people around the country doing a magnificent job to make sure all the preparations to control the disease are carried out.

"We are grateful to everyone who have played their part in this exercise. This is a major national effort, the focus of which is to contain and control the disease and then eradicate it."

Mr Brown said it was important not to prejudge the health and safety investigation into a possible link between the Pirbright laboratory in Surrey and the outbreak.
