PM opens child services debate

Gordon Brown is to call for a national debate on the future of children's services.

The Prime Minister will continue his drive to forge a "new politics" and reconnect government with voters as he opens a state-of-the-art school in Bristol.

He will also confirm a £21 billion cash injection over the next three years for building and repairing schools.

Ministers claim that some 180 new or refurbished sites will be opened during the next six months under the Building Schools for the Future scheme.

However, the programme - which aims to upgrade all 3,500 secondary schools in England by 2020 - is still thought to be behind schedule.

Mr Brown will be accompanied on his visit to the Bristol Brunel Academy by Schools Secretary Ed Balls.

Launching the consultation on children's services, Mr Balls is expected to say: "We have made huge strides over the last decade to improve services both in and out of schools for young people and parents.

"But now is the time to listen to people about what we can do better to help children achieve the best education, have a happy, healthy and safe childhood and prevent young people going off the rails and getting into trouble."
