PM threatens Iran with sanctions

Britain is ready to push for further sanctions against Iran if it does not give up its nuclear ambitions, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said.

He was speaking alongside Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert after the two had talks at No 10 this afternoon.

Mr Brown said he was ready to work through the United Nations to achieve the tougher restrictions on Iran, and would urge the EU to impose stiffer penalties too.

The two leaders also discussed the stalled Middle East peace process, and the Premier stressed that Britain stands ready to give economic aid to the Palestinian Authority provided its Hamas-led administration recognises Israel and security problems are overcome.

Mr Brown said of Iran: "We are absolutely clear that we are ready and will push for further sanctions against Iran. We will work through the United Nations to achieve this."

After urging tougher EU sanctions, the Prime Minister added: "We do not support the nuclear ambitions of that country."

Mr Brown said that the next step would be the report next month on the implementation by Iran of a workplan drawn up by the International Atomic Energy Authority - the world nuclear watchdog.

"It is on that basis that we are prepared to push for further sanctions at the United Nations," he said.

"I believe we leave people in no doubt about both the risk that is entailed for the world community by Iranian ambitions for nuclear weapons, but at the same time our determination as nations working together... to be able to take the action that is necessary through sanctions."

Mr Olmert said that while sanctions were important, they were not enough on their own, and he said it was essential to maintain pressure on Iran.
