PM 'to lead nation during downturn'

Gordon Brown insisted that he was determined to lead Britain through the current economic downturn.

The Prime Minister, speaking in an interview at the G8 summit in Japan, acknowledged that the country was going through "very difficult times".

But he insisted that the UK was better placed than most countries to withstand the problems being caused by rising world food and oil prices and the international credit crunch.

His comments followed a warning by the British Chambers of Commerce that the economy was now at "serious risk" of recession as falling orders and rising costs tighten the squeeze on business.

"I believe that the British economy is in a better position than most economies so I am going to take the British economy through these difficulties," Mr Brown said.

"If I thought I wasn't the right person I wouldn't have stood for leader. The test of leadership is taking people through difficult times.

"Every country in the world is facing a difficult economic time because of what has happened in oil prices and food prices.

"I think I am the right person to take people through these difficult times."
