Mr Brown paid tribute to the "dedication, professionalism and courage" of Pc Beshenivsky during a ceremony in Bradford.

Pc Beshenivsky, 38, was shot by two men as she responded to an alarm call at the Universal Travel Agents on Morley Street in the city on November 18, 2005.

Mr Brown was joined on stage by chairman of the Police Memorial Trust Michael Winner and Pc Beshenivsky's widower Paul and their children.

Speaking in front of a crowd of dignitaries including Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, and friends, family and former colleagues of the officer, the Prime Minister said: "We are all gathered here together because of the importance of today, to celebrate the dedication, the service, the professionalism and, most of all, the courage of a young police officer who gave her life serving the community, gave her life doing what she loved doing, gave her life doing what police officers have to do every day."

Mr Brown added: "We want to say that we will never forget the life and the sacrifice of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky. I come here today because I believe the whole nation owes her a debt of gratitude."

Mr Brown described Pc Beshenivsky as "a wonderful wife, a wonderful mother, a wonderful servant of the community, a courageous woman".

He said: "Sharon, we will never ever forget."

Mr Brown also praised the dignity of Pc Beshenivsky's family and shook hands with Mr Beshenivsky and their children. They were a "magnificent family" and he praised Pc Beshenivsky's three children and two stepchildren as "very, very courageous".

Mr Brown told them: "We wish you every success in everything you do in the future, we are very, very proud of all of you."
