PM urges EU sanctions against Burma

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged the European Union to tighten sanctions on Burma to increase pressure on the country's repressive junta to make moves towards democracy.

And Mr Brown appealed to the world's biggest economies to provide recovery support to Burma to allow the south-east Asian nation to rebuild its economy if the military regime takes steps towards a democratic future.

Mr Brown was speaking as EU foreign ministers met to discuss proposals for tough sanctions against individuals and trade invaluable commodities.

As well as urging sanctions against goods like timber, gems and metals, Britain is pressing for a ban on future investment unless there is progress on reconciliation following the suppression of street protests in recent weeks.

Mr Brown on Monday received an international petition bearing more than three-quarters of a million signatures calling on the UN Security Council to oppose the violent crackdown on demonstrators in Burma.

The 763,138-signature petition was handed in at 10 Downing Street by representatives of the Avaaz campaign group along with six Burmese monks.

Speaking after receiving the petition, Mr Brown voiced continued support for the pro-democracy demonstrators and their leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

He said: "I believe that the gaze of the whole world will remain on the Burmese regime as long as people know about the violence being practised against Burmese citizens, the repression against religious leaders and the loss of civil liberties suffered by Aung San Suu Kyi and so many people.

"That is why today we will be pressing at the EU for sanctions against the Burmese regime."

Mr Brown said he had today written to leaders of the largest economies around the world urging them to join Britain in offering support for the "redevelopment and resuscitation" of the Burmese economy so long as the junta moves towards reconciliation and democracy.
