PM urges Iran 'to listen to people'

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged Iran to listen to its people's grievances after at least seven were reported to have been killed in protests over alleged election fraud.

Mr Brown said: "The elections are a matter for the Iranian people, but if there are serious questions that are now being asked about the conduct of the elections, they have got to be answered. There must be no violence in response to peaceful protests."

The country's state radio said the victims died in shooting that erupted after several people "tried to attack a military location" after an "unauthorised gathering".

More than 100,000 opponents of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had marched through Tehran on Monday to protest against alleged vote-rigging in last week's elections.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband also warned Britain must not take sides in the Iranian election dispute.

Appealing for restraint by the authorities in Tehran, he played down the reforming credentials of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and said the West should not "fall into the trap" of backing one side.

The spokesman for Iran's Guardian Council said on Tuesday it was ready to recount specific ballot boxes in last week's disputed presidential elections.

US president Barack Obama earlier voiced concern at violence in Iran following the country's presidential elections.

Speaking in Washington, Mr Obama said it "would be wrong for me to be silent" after seeing images from the Iranian capital Tehran of shots being fired on hundreds of thousands of backers of pro-reform leader Mir Hossein Mousavi who had gathered for a mass protest in the city.

Mr Obama said Iranian voters have a right to feel their ballots matter, and he urged an investigation into the vote-rigging allegations goes forward without additional violence.
