PM wants political funding shake-up

In his first Downing Street news conference as Prime Minister, Mr Brown said there was no doubt that the system should be improved.
But he said that progress depended upon the parties working together to move forward on the proposals for reform by former Whitehall mandarin Sir Hayden Phillips.
"I don't think that there is anybody who has looked at the political system in Britain who is in any doubt that we could move to a better, more transparent and more acceptable political funding system for the future, but that is what the debate is about," he said.
"A lot of the answers to that debate will depend on the willingness of all parties to co-operate in trying to get a solution to these problems."
His comments followed the announcement last week that no charges would be brought as a result of the Scotland Yard cash-for-honours investigation into claims that aides to Tony Blair offered peerages in return for donations to Labour Party funds.
