PM warned over green policies

With the issue high on the agenda at this week's G8 summit in Japan, the Commons Environmental Audit Committee said that the Government needed to show a greater commitment to tackling climate change domestically if it was to remain credible on the international stage.
It cautioned Mr Brown not to abandon "green" policies in the face of the economic slowdown and called on ministers to re-think policies - such as airport expansion - which ran counter to their climate change objectives.
While the Government had gained credit for commissioning Lord Stern's review on the economic impact of climate change, the committee said that would quickly be lost if it was try to meet its targets for cutting carbon emissions by buying international credits.
"It is clear that we need to display greater commitment to tackling climate change domestically if we are to have a credible voice in international climate change negotiations," it said.
"The leadership demonstrated in the commissioning of the Stern Review and bringing forward the Climate Change Bill is in danger of being undermined by policies such as airport expansion plans or an over-reliance on international credits in meeting domestic emission reduction commitments."
The committee said that the Government needed to adopt a "subtle approach" to negotiations, particularly when it came to persuading developing countries to accept measures to mitigate the effects of climate change.
