The Prime Minister himself told reporters not to "hold your breath" on the story while his official spokesman dismissed the reports as "wrong".
Mr Blair marks the tenth anniversary on Wednesday of his arrival in 10 Downing Street on the back of a landslide general election victory.
But the following day Labour is forecast to suffer a serious drubbing at the polls as voters elect English councils, the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly.
That led to speculation he could set out the timetable for his departure within days in an attempt to divert some of the flak.
Questioned if he planned to make the announcement before May 3 during a visit to Poland, the PM insisted: "You know I never discuss these issues at all. But I wouldn't hold your breath on that particular story."
Earlier, his spokesman had told reporters: "I have one word for the stories: wrong."
Asked if he was saying the stories that Mr Blair would make an announcement about his future before the local elections were wrong, the spokesman replied: "Correct."
Mr Blair was in Warsaw for talks with the Polish prime minister and president - twins Jaroslaw and Lech Kaczynskitwins - on the future of the EU.
The talks were part of a continuing attempt to break the deadlock over the EU's constitutional crisis.
