Police arrest two over boy's murder

Police investigating the murder of 16-year-old Jonathan Matondo, who was found shot dead in a park, have arrested a second 18-year-old man in connection with his death.

The churchgoing teenager's body was found in a small recreation area in the Burngreave district of Sheffield on Wednesday night.

South Yorkshire Police said the first suspect was detained at his home in Burngreave earlier on Friday and was being held in custody.

A force spokesman said the second 18-year-old was arrested in Union Street, in the centre of Sheffield, on Friday evening, and is currently being questioned in connection with the teenager's death.

He added that the second arrested youth was also believed to be a local man.

A post-mortem examination showed Jonathan died from a single gunshot wound to his head.

On Thursday night Jonathan's uncle, Armand Vibila, made an emotional appeal for information to help catch his nephew's killer.

Mr Vibila said Jonathan was "too young to die". "This should not happen to our community," he said. "This should not happen to my Jonathan."

At the same time Jonathan's local vicar said the boy was a regular churchgoer and had talked about becoming a priest.

"He was a good person," said the Reverend Jack Kinsiona, from the Light of Christ Church, in Burngreave, who was in tears as he remembered the youngster.
