Police caution Rooney over spitting

Football star Wayne Rooney has been cautioned by police after spitting at a photographer, it has emerged.

The Manchester United striker has also been forced to write a letter of apology to victim Lee Simmons, The Sun reported.

Rooney, 22, spat on the snapper's back as he left a Central London restaurant with wife Coleen.

The footballer was interviewed under caution after the incident which happened outside the Hakkasan Chinese restaurant in Hanway Place, near Oxford Street, on July 29.

In law, deliberately spitting at someone is an offence of common assault.

According to The Sun, Rooney first turned up at the police station on Thursday morning but was sent away because he did not bring the letter of apology agreed as part of the settlement.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "A 22-year-old man attended a central London police station by prior arrangement.

"The man received a caution for common assault in relation to an incident which occurred in Hanway Place."
