Police detain men over shooting

Police have been granted permission to further detain two men arrested in connection with the murder inquiry into a Polish care worker shot dead in crossfire between two gunmen.

The pair were arrested in the early hours of Saturday and were taken to a south London police station, where they remain in custody.

Magda Pniewska, 26, was reportedly on the phone to her sister Elzbirta in Poland when she was gunned down near the nursing home where she worked.

She was said to be telling her how happy she was and how she planned to come home for Christmas when the shots rang out.

Ms Pniewska was caught in the crossfire as she took a short-cut through a car park close to New Cross Gate railway station, south-east London on Tuesday night, where gunshots were heard at around 6.20pm.

Police found Ms Pniewska bleeding from her head outside the Stunell House block of flats. She was taken by ambulance to King's College Hospital, but died just over an hour later.

Witnesses saw one man standing next to a Volkswagen Polo and the other gunman standing at the top of steps leading to a field known as Bridge House Meadows.

Her death is the second shooting to take place in the area in less than a month.

A warrant for further detention in relation to the two men was granted at a magistrates' court this afternoon.

Three other men and a woman were also previously arrested in connection with the inquiry. One of the men was later bailed to return pending further enquiries and the other three people were released with no further action.
