Police given more time to quiz man

An Australian judge has extended the time allowed to detain without charge an Indian doctor arrested in connection with the failed terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow.

Meanwhile, a senior British investigator travelled to Australia to question him, officials said.

Australian authorities released a second Indian doctor who was questioned about his suspect colleague, saying he had no connection to the plot and was free to resume his normal life.

Australian police arrested Muhammad Haneef, 27, at the international airport in the eastern city of Brisbane on Monday as he tried to board a flight, believed to be to India via Malaysia.

Officials said they acted on information provided by British authorities.

Haneef, 27, was being held under counterterrorism laws that allow police to detain a suspect without charge as long as a judge agrees there are grounds to do so.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty said authorities were granted permission on Tuesday night to hold Haneef for another 48 hours without charging him, and that this could be extended if there were "reasonable grounds".

A counterterrorism expert from the team investigating the failed bombings in Britain was en route to Australia, he said.

Keelty said Britain had not sought to extradite Haneef, and cautioned that he may yet be fully cleared of any connection with the plots.

Prime Minister John Howard said the expert from the British Metropolitan police would "assist with the interrogations" and other aspects of the inquiry in Australia.
