Police make pre-carnival arrests

A number of people have been arrested in the build-up to the Notting Hill Carnival, which begins on Sunday.

The arrests were made as part of the crackdown on criminals suspected of planning to target the two-day carnival.

Four people are being held on suspicion of robbery following raids at four addresses in Peckham, south-east London.

At one of the addresses officers recovered what is thought to be a quantity of class A drugs and £1,000.

Police officers arrested another man suspected of handling a stolen mobile phone at a home in Ealing. A second property was also searched.

The arrests are part of a continued blitz by police to clamp down on potential troublemakers before the carnival kicks off this weekend.

Officers said many of those arrested will be given bail conditions which block them from entering the Notting Hill area on Sunday or Bank Holiday Monday.

More than 11,000 officers will police this year's festival, the largest of its kind in Europe.

British Transport Police will be using metal detector arches at railway and Tube stations to identify those carrying guns and knives.

The arrests bring the total number held ahead of the carnival as part of Operation Razorback to 19. Other raids have taken place in Islington, Ealing, Croydon, Southwark, Hackney, Lewisham and Peckham.
