Gary Guthrie, 35, died of his injuries after the attack in Streatham, south London, in the early hours of Monday.
Police believe late night revellers at two nearby nightclubs may hold vital clues to the identity of the killer.
Police refused to discuss how many weapons were involved in the shooting on Streatham High Road, the A23.
But a large number of bullet casings littered the ground at the scene close to Streatham Railway Station.
Forensic officers were also seen to remove a silver handgun which will undergo ballistic tests.
Scotland Yard said 10 people arrested in connection with the shooting had been released on bail.
A spokesman said Mr Guthrie lived in Lakeview Road, Streatham, less than a mile from the scene of the shooting.
Friends of the 35-year-old took him to Mayday Hospital in Croydon at about 5.15am. But police said he died less than an hour later.
The second man, aged in his 30s, remains at a south London hospital under armed guard. His condition was described as "comfortable" on Tuesday.
