Police probe cadet's loch death

Police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old Army cadet who was thrown from a capsizing boat during a training exercise on a loch.

Kaylee McIntosh, from Fyvie in Aberdeenshire, died when she and 11 others were thrown from the vessel on Loch Carnan on South Uist in the Western Isles on Friday.

About 40 cadets from 2nd Battalion Highlands in Aberdeenshire were taking part in the exercise in three boats when the incident happened.

A rescue operation was launched and the youngster was taken to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway where she died a short time later.

There were eight cadets on board and four adults, Northern Constabulary said. No-one else was injured.

A statement from the Ministry of Defence said: "It is with deep regret that the MoD can confirm the death of an Army Cadet from The Highlanders Battalion Army Cadet Force while on camp in the Western Isles.

"Northern Constabulary are investigating the circumstances of the death and we will co-operate with this investigation fully.

"The rest of the cadets taking part in activities will return home as soon as possible. The next of kin have been informed."

Secretary of State for Defence Des Browne said: "This is a terrible and tragic incident and we will assist in every way we can with the investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, fellow cadets and instructors at this very difficult time."

The Army Cadet Force is a youth organisation that offers training in a range of skills including first aid. Boys and girls aged 12 to 18 are eligible to join.
