Mohammed Al-Majed, from Qatar, suffered a serious head injury during the assault outside a takeaway in the seaside resort of Hastings, East Sussex, just before midnight on Friday.
He died in King's College Hospital in south London late on Sunday evening.
The 16-year-old was a student at EF International Language Schools in White Rock, Hastings.
His family are understood to have flown to England.
Sussex Police said they were treating the teenager's death as racially motivated.
The student was with friends outside the USA Fried Chicken and Kebab House, near the junction of Robertson Street and the A259 seafront road, when there was an altercation with a group of local teenagers.
Three men, aged 17, 18 and 20, have been arrested and interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Graham Pratt, who is leading the investigation, said: "I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the assault to contact police. It was a busy time of the evening and there were many young people in the area. I am sure many of them would have seen what happened.
"The young man was a visitor to Hastings and his death is indeed tragic. Our thoughts are with his family."
