Police will vote on right to strike

Police organisations from across the UK also passed a dramatic vote of no confidence in Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, calling for her immediate resignation.
The decision to vote on whether to seek industrial rights will intensify pressure on the Government in the dispute over police pay.
Police officers are banned by law from taking industrial action.
Following an emergency meeting of hundreds of delegates in Westminster, officers voted to ask their colleagues in a formal ballot whether they should begin to seek the same rights as other workers.
A spokesman for the Police Federation of England and Wales said the vote would be conducted among all officers, including those in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The ballot is likely to take place in the first three months of next year.
Alan Gordon, vice chairman of the Police Federation, said some officers want to challenge current legislation, which bars any type of strike or industrial action.
He said: "What's coming through from representatives around the country is police officers do not want to go on strike.
"They do not want to do anything that will jeopardise the safety of people in this country."
