Poll gives Tories five-point lead

31 January 2007
The ICM survey for The Guardian put the Conservatives on 40% - up two since Gordon Brown abandoned general election plans last month - while Labour was down three on 35%.
The Liberal Democrats were up two on 18% despite the sudden resignation of leader Sir Menzies Campbell.
The poll would still, apparently, have given Labour the most seats in the Commons.
But Mr Brown would have been well short of a majority, forcing him to enter coalition talks with smaller parties.
Both main parties have seen a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes since the beginning of the party conference season when Labour had a comfortable lead in the polls.
But that has evaporated in a series of polls following Tory tax cut pledges and the Prime Minister's last-minute decision not to call a snap autumn election.
:: ICM interviewed a random sample of 1,011 adults. by telephone between October 26 and 28. Results were weighted to the profile of all adults.
