Poll highlights a divided Labour

A majority of voters now see Labour as more divided than the Conservatives under John Major, according to a new poll.

Some 56% of those questioned in the survey for Saturday's edition of The Independent saw Tony Blair's party as more divided than Major's Tories, against 22% who regarded them as more united.

Sir John's time in office from 1990-97 was dominated by internal feuding, particularly over Europe, which reached such a pitch that in 1995 he resigned as leader in order to challenge critics to stand against him.

Despite the perception that rivalry between Mr Blair and Gordon Brown is splitting Labour in two, the Chancellor is still viewed as the runaway favourite to be the next Prime Minister, the poll indicates.

Some 54% of those questioned expect Mr Brown to succeed Mr Blair at 10 Downing Street, against just 6% for his closest rival, Home Secretary John Reid.

A second poll has suggested Mr Blair's announcement that he would quit within 12 months failed to satisfy voters.

And it cast doubt on the assumption that Mr Brown is the ideal candidate to lead Labour into the next election.

The ICM poll for Saturday's Guardian found 50% of those questioned believed Mr Blair should quit as Prime Minister before the end of 2006 - 38% of them saying he should go immediately and a further 12% before the New Year.

Another 12% said Mr Blair should step down ahead of the Scottish, Welsh and local elections in May next year

Just 6% favoured the period following the May 2007 elections, which is widely considered to be the time pencilled in by Mr Blair himself for his departure. Meanwhile, 21% said he should stay on and fight the next election.
