Poll: Labour support at 13-year low

Labour's opinion poll rating has fallen to its lowest level since Tony Blair became leader 13 years ago, according to a new survey.

The Populus poll for The Times put Labour on 29% - one point down on last month.

It shows support for the party falling to a level last seen when Michael Foot was leader in the 1980s.

The Tories, who also dropped one point, maintain their eight-point lead over Labour on 37%, while the Liberal Democrats are up two points on 20%.

The poll also found that 73% believed that the sailors and marines captured by the Iranians should not have been allowed to sell their stories to the media.

But only 30% thought Defence Secretary Des Browne should resign over the issue as against 59% who did not.

Populus interviewed 1,503 adults aged 18 and over by telephone between April 13 and 15.
