Poll puts Tories in 13-point lead

Gordon Brown has been hit by fresh opinion poll woe as the Tories moved into a 13-point lead - their biggest advantage for almost two decades and enough for a 64-seat Commons majority.

Although David Cameron's opposition dropped one point to 40%, the Prime Minister's party suffered a six-point slump to 27% in the wake of a series of crises for the Government.

The ComRes survey for The Independent put the Tories ahead of Labour in every age band, social group and UK region other than 18-24 year olds and Scotland.

Not since Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister in August 1988 have the Conservatives been so far ahead, the newspaper said.

The poll is a fresh blow to the Prime Minister, who suffered his worst week in Number 10 last week since succeeding Tony Blair in June.

Weekend polls made grim reading for the PM, suggesting his reputation for economic competence and the ability to handle a crisis had been wiped out by the series of crises.

One even suggested that Labour would be doing better under Tony Blair, five months after he stepped down amid claims he had become an electoral liability for the party.

Mr Brown urged voters to take "a long-term view about what we are trying to achieve".

The Liberal Democrats - who are in the process of choosing a new leader - rose two points to 18% with "others" up four at 14%.
