Poll results 'a warning for Labour'

Almost half of Labour members believe that last week's election results were bad for the party and should act as an "alarm bell" that it could lose power if it does not change direction.

A poll was commissioned by left-wing deputy leadership candidate Jon Cruddas, who said its results highlighted the need for "a long hard look" at the state of Labour as well as new policies to broaden the party's appeal.

It came as another candidate for the deputy leadership, Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain, issued a call for Labour to reconnect with its grassroots and protect its links with the union movement.

Mr Hain published a pamphlet setting out detailed proposals to reform the party, including the reaffirmation of annual conference as Labour's "sovereign policy-making body", the creation of a Bill of Rights for Members and the strengthening of the National Policy Forum, which allows members an input into policy development.

He said he would resist calls for conference to be transformed into a US-style "showcase" event as well as "misguided" demands for the size of the union vote at the annual gathering to be cut below 50%.

The YouGov poll found that 61% of Labour members think the party's leadership pays too little attention to their views.

Some 49% thought last week's local, Scottish and Welsh election results were bad for Labour, against just 10% who saw them as good for the party.

And 45% agreed with the view that the election results should "sound an alarm bell... if we don't change the way we do things and change some of our policies, then we could lose the next election."

Mr Cruddas, who unveiled Blackadder actor and Labour activist Tony Robinson as a supporter, said the poll provided "a snap-shot of party members' views".

Launching his pamphlet on the eve of Mr Blair's expected announcement that he will stand down as Labour leader, Mr Hain said the party needed to reconnect with its grassroots to win a fourth successive term in office.
