Possible drugs link to death probed

The fiancee of TV presenter Mark Speight may have died after taking drugs prescribed for a medical condition, his mother said.

Natasha Collins, who was also a TV presenter, was found in the bath of the penthouse home which the couple shared in St John's Wood, north west London, on Thursday.

Mr Speight was arrested on suspicion of murder and supplying class A drugs and has been bailed by police until early February.

On Friday he insisted he had nothing to do with his fiancee's death and his mother, art teacher Jacqueline, told reporters that Miss Collins may have taken the wrong medication as she had a medical condition for which she took tablets.

"There is no way on earth that Mark would do anything to harm Tash," she said from her home in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton. "He had been seeing her for quite a while and as far as I know everything was OK between them.

"I'm in absolute shock, I was only with them at Christmas. They both seemed fine and very happy."

Miss Collins was hit by a car around seven years ago and it was reported on Saturday that she had suffered regular fits ever since.

On Friday, a spokeswoman for Speight said: "At the moment no-one knows what happened. Mark found her body in the bathroom and immediately called an ambulance and the police.

"The police are conducting further inquiries and a post-mortem is under way.

"Mark was the only other person present in the flat and has therefore been questioned by police as a matter of course. He is assisting police with their inquiries and had nothing to do with Natasha's death. Mark is absolutely distraught."
