Post Office raid victim mourned

Hundreds of mourners have paid their respects to a "much-loved" sub-postmaster's son shot dead in an attempted armed robbery.

The family of Craig Hodson-Walker walked through the snow to the church from their Post Office in Fairfield, Worcestershire, to say a final farewell to the 29-year-old, who was shot in the chest during the raid on January 9.

His father Ken Hodson-Walker, 56, was shot in the leg during the robbery and attended the funeral in a wheelchair.

Mr Hodson-Walker's fiancee, Lisa Bundy, 26, wept as his flower-covered coffin was carried in to St Mark's Church by pallbearers, including his 27-year-old brother, James. Miss Bundy was comforted by his mother, Judy Hodson-Walker, 56.

During the service, the Rev Barbara Mapley described Mr Hodson-Walker as well-liked and hard-working.

She said: "Craig is constantly surrounded by love and lives on in the hearts of those who will miss him so much. He has gone on ahead of us far sooner than anyone imagined through that terrible deed but his memory is treasured and he is safe in the arms of God and we give thanks for that."

Family and close friends listened inside the church while hundreds of well-wishers gathered in the nearby village hall, where the service was relayed through a sound system.

Mr Hodson-Walker's coffin was carried out of the church to the tune of Beautiful Boy by John Lennon.

More than 300 mourners, including local dignitaries, lined Stourbridge Road as the hearse drove by, taking the coffin to the crematorium in Redditch. Mr Hodson-Walker's family requested that donations made in his memory be given to the RSPCA.

Four men have been charged with the murder of Mr Hodson-Walker, attempted murder and attempted robbery. They will appear at Birmingham Crown Court for a plea hearing on July 10.
