Post workers announce more strikes

Postal workers' leaders have served formal notice on the Royal Mail about two 48-hour strikes which will cripple deliveries next month.

The Communication Workers Union said its members will walk out at noon on Thursday October 4 and again from 3am on Monday October 8.

The timing of the industrial action effectively means there will be no collections or delivery of post for at least five days.

The union said the industrial action, which follows a series of strikes in the summer, will involve 130,000 postal workers.

The union is taking industrial action in protest at the Royal Mail's pay offer of a 2.5% increase, as well as the organisation's modernisation plans, which it says would lead to 40,000 job losses.

Talks are expected to be held over the weekend to reach a deal in the long-running dispute.
