Postal workers stage new walkout

Thousands of Post Office workers are to stage a fresh strike in a separate pay and jobs row to the main Royal Mail dispute.

Around 5,000 members of the Communication Workers Union working in Crown Post Offices will walk out at 2.30pm until the end of business.

The workers are protesting at plans to close 70 Crown offices - main branches sited on high streets - and transfer postal services to WH Smith stores.

The workers also claim their pay has been frozen for two years and that redundancy payments have been reduced.

They have staged a number of strikes in the past few months, although most Post Offices have remained open while the UK's network of sub-post offices have not been affected.

Industrial action by more than 100,000 Royal Mail workers was suspended last week so that fresh talks can be held over pay and jobs.

The union has rejected a 2.5% pay offer and has warned that Royal Mail's modernisation plans will lead to 40,000 job losses.
