Prescott dismisses 'quit' reports

John Prescott has said reports that he is shortly to announce that he will quit the Commons at the next election are "press prattle".

The former deputy prime minister, who quit high office alongside Tony Blair in June, was reported to have called a meeting at his home on Saturday.

The Hull Daily Mail said senior Labour figures in the city where Mr Prescott has been an MP since 1970 had been invited, along with some close friends.

It comes amid mounting speculation that new Prime Minister Gordon Brown will call a snap General Election, perhaps as early as October or next spring.

But Mr Prescott's office offered no comment beyond his brief assessment of the report.

Unlike Mr Blair, he opted to return to Labour's backbenches rather than stepping down immediately in June.

Mr Prescott is already in talks with publishers over a book of his life story, receiving a reported £500,000 advance for the highly-anticipated memoirs.
