President Obama wins book award

US President Barack Obama has won another victory by scooping a Galaxy British Book Award.

Mr Obama triumphed in the Tesco Biography of the Year category for Dreams From My Father, his memoir of his early life and African-American heritage.

His opposition included works by Paul O'Grady, Julie Walters and Dawn French.

Mr Obama was in the UK this week for G20 talks to tackle the global economic downturn.

The president was beaten in another category by Man Booker winner Aravind Adiga, who was named the Borders Author of the Year for his novel The White Tiger.

Mr Obama had been shortlisted for The Audacity Of Hope, which outlines his own deep-felt political and personal values.

The shortlist in that category was crammed with winners of other literary gongs including Orange prize-winner Rose Tremain, Costa Book of the Year winner Sebastian Barry and Costa Biography Laureate Diana Athill.

The glittering awards ceremony was hosted by Richard and Judy in London.

The Nibbies - so called because of the distinctive pen-nib trophies - give readers across Britain a say, with the winners decided by a mix of industry academy and public voting.

Michael Palin won the Outstanding Achievement award.
