The 23-year-old Army officer spent 10 weeks in Afghanistan at the beginning of the year and appears to have reiterated his desire to serve again in a conflict zone.

Harry's deployment to Helmand Province was cut short in February when a media blackout was broken by a website which revealed the young royal had fulfilled a lifelong ambition to fight for his country.

Within minutes of arriving back in the UK the prince, a Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals, talked about wanting to return to Afghanistan.

The third in line to the throne said: "As far as I see it, yeah I would love to go back out and I've already mentioned it to (my commanding officer) that I want to go out very, very soon."

That request was later ruled out by the head of the Army General Sir Richard Dannatt, who said an officer would not normally be sent back to the Middle East so soon after returning from a tour.

But the Sun newspaper has quoted a regimental source as saying when the prince's regiment is deployed to Afghanistan next year he does not want to be left behind.

A Clarence House spokeswoman dismissed the reports as speculation and said: "Prince Harry has gone back to work with his regiment to resume his normal duties."
