Prince spends £850 on store drinks

Prince William surprised staff at a supermarket by stocking up on £850 worth of alcohol, the store manager said.

Wearing a T-shirt, baseball cap and jeans, he cleared the Asda store in Weymouth, Dorset, out of Pimm's during his shopping trip.

The prince, who is training to be a troop leader at nearby Bovington Army Camp, filled four trolleys with wines, spirits, beer and snacks at the store.

Store manager Darren Rideout said: "He came in the store at 2.10pm with two bodyguards.

"He had four trolley loads of shopping which was mainly alcohol and snacks. He cleared us out of Pimm's.

"A few people came up and spoke to him and he was laughing and joking with them. The check-out girl didn't actually recognise him and he packed his own shopping.

"They left at 3.15pm with the prince in a black Audi followed by two black Range Rovers."

He added: "We do get troops in from time to time taking advantage of our cheap booze offers so I suppose it was his turn."

The prince's shopping trip came just hours before Channel 4 screened a documentary about the death of his mother.

Earlier this week Prince William's senior aide Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton wrote to Channel Four calling for the images of Diana, Princess of Wales, to be removed from the programme.
