Pilot Jim Martin and paramedic Jon Ker were in a "critical but stable condition" in hospital after their microlight crashed near Felton in Northumberland, Northumbria Police said.

It was a second lucky escape for the pair, both members of the Great North Air Ambulance team.

They were injured in a climbing accident on Ben Nevis two years ago, which claimed the life of their friend and colleague Dr Rupert Bennett.

Mr Ker won a bravery award for saving Mr Martin's life in the tragedy.

In their latest accident, the aircraft fell into a copse near Bergham Park Golf and Leisure Club.

Emergency services released the two men, who were taken to Newcastle General Hospital.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said there was as yet no indication as to how the crash happened.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) was informed and attended the scene.
