Probe into minister's home expenses

Employment Minister Tony McNulty's allowances claim for staying in his parents' home is to be investigated by Parliament's standards watchdog.

Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards John Lyon has accepted a complaint after Mr McNulty claimed about £60,000 in allowances since 2001 for staying in the property in his Harrow constituency in north west London.

Mr McNulty has insisted he was acting within Commons rules although he disclosed that he stopped claiming the allowance in January.

He said he used the house, which he owns, as a base two or three days a week while working in the constituency, and slept there at weekends when he first entered Parliament.

Mr McNulty's main home is only a few miles away in Hammersmith.

A formal complaint about Mr McNulty's Additional Costs Allowance (ACA) claim was made to the Commissioner by Tory MP Greg Hands.

The ACA allows MPs with constituencies outside inner London to claim up to £24,000 to cover the cost of staying overnight away from their main home for the purpose of performing parliamentary duties.

The investigation comes as another watchdog is preparing to launch a comprehensive review of MPs' pay and perks.

A spokeswoman for the Commissioner's office said: "He has accepted a complaint about Mr McNulty."

But the Commissioner has rejected a complaint against Labour MP Nigel Griffiths, who reportedly cheated on his wife in the Commons.
