The woman was approached by the man in St Marys Street, Preston, Lancs, just after 1.10am on Saturday.

After she got into the back of the vehicle the man produced a knife and raped her at knifepoint.

She managed to escape and inform police who arrested a 26-year-old local man soon after.

Lancashire Police said the incident should serve as a warning to other street workers.

Detective Inspector David McKenna said: "Street workers are very vulnerable to this type of attack and police are treating it as a very serious incident.

"I would warn other street workers to take extreme care and avoid putting themselves in a situation where this type of incident can occur."
