'Psycho' killer due to be sentenced

A drug dealer who murdered a store detective in a scene reminiscent of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Psycho is due to be sentenced.

David Watson, 20, of Hackney, east London, stabbed Paul Cavanagh in the neck after attempting to steal a £15.99 CD from a HMV store in Norwich in December.

Jurors convicted Watson of murdering the 30-year-old store detective, of Rockland St Mary, near Norwich.

Norwich Crown Court heard Mr Cavanagh suffered a 14cm knife wound which severed a jugular vein as he tried to restrain Watson.

Watson was also convicted of wounding Mr Cavanagh's fellow store detective, Gavin Levett, as he fled the scene.

But he was cleared of attempting to wound an off-duty special constable who pursued him through streets busy with Christmas shoppers. The chase ended when Watson dropped the knife and was arrested.

The court was told Watson stabbed Mr Cavanagh in an episode reminiscent of a scene from the film Psycho, before wounding Mr Levett as he made his escape.

Prosecutors said Watson was afraid police would find crack cocaine in his bag when he was originally detained by Mr Cavanagh and wanted to get away.

After the case, chief inspector Roger Wiltshire, of Norfolk Police, said: "This incident was truly awful - a hard-working family man lost his life after what effectively started off as a petty shoplifting.

"Members of the public were put at risk by this criminal brazenly brandishing a knife through our busy city centre."
